The regions of the Arctic Five universities are critical to the status of European Arctic, its reputation, promotion and marketability. Here the urban centres and rural settings of the Arctic Five and the overall image of the regions are drivers for economic growth, within a framework of sustainable development and sparsely populated communities.
The aim of the regional development area is to help understand, educate and enhance the sustainable development of the urban centres and rural areas represented by the Arctic Five. Many current economic trends and models developing in the Arctic are conflicting, for example the pressures for mining and resource extraction versus the importance of the environment for tourism, lifestyle migration and community spirit.
Here the Arctic Five educational initiatives and research in regionalism help guide the responsible and sustainable use of resources across the Arctic Region and raise the profile of European Arctic at the regional, national and international level. The regional alliance also helps promote the development of flourishing and safe place for trade and industry. It encourages and facilitates the dissemination of this knowledge to the wider EU and areas with similar regional challenges and opportunities.
